Mermaids are a symbol to me, more than a folkloric representation. Remove them from the drowning or rescue of sailors. I paint them to capture a sense of fluidity, freedom, and calm. In my last visits to Crete, I did a lot of snorkeling. The clear water of the Mediterranean was the gateway to a parallel world for those who would immerse themselves completely. Ordinary people, with the aid of ridiculous-looking flippers and goggles, discovered a world whose liquid grace immediately forgave and annexed them. With a gentle flip of my duck-like feet, the water propelled me forward, and while earthbound on land, I could now leap and turn sommersaults. Moving in the ocean gives one weightlessness and freedom- but I suppose a clever mermaid can feel this way even on land.
